On October 11, 2024, the Livestock Industry Foundation for Africa (LIFA) proudly joined the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Oyo State Chapter, in celebrating World Egg Day. This annual event aims to raise awareness of the health benefits of eggs and promote their inclusion in daily diets.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, eggs gained prominence due to their potential in fighting the virus. Researchers from the University of California discovered that eggs contain IgY antibodies, which can neutralize SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. These egg-derived antibodies offer several advantages, including:
– Effective neutralization of the virus
– Ease of production
– Low-cost solutions
– Flexible administration methods
In response to this discovery, LIFA developed and promoted immune-boosting, egg-based local food recipes during the pandemic, particularly for the elderly in Southwest Nigeria. These recipes included egg amala, egg moinmoin, and egg-enriched soups, demonstrating the versatility of eggs in enhancing nutrition.
As part of its ongoing advocacy for egg consumption, LIFA once again collaborated with PAN Oyo State for World Egg Day 2024. Together, the team visited key locations in Ibadan to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs. The following areas were among those visited:
1. IDC Model School I & II, Akobo, Ibadan
2. Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) Orphanage Home
3. Divine Senior Citizens Palace Foundation
These visits targeted various age groups, emphasizing that the health benefits of eating eggs daily are not restricted to any particular demographic. Eggs are a superfood, and LIFA has been committed to promoting their consumption to improve immunity and boost egg consumption across Nigeria.
Interview with PAN Oyo State Vice President, Mr. Olukayode Ogunlowo
As part of the event, LIFA’s representative, Mr. Lawal Afeez, interviewed the Vice President of PAN Oyo State, Mr. Olukayode Ogunlowo, to gain further insights into the significance of World Egg Day.
Mr. Lawal: Can you tell us the main objectives of World Egg Day?
Mr. Ogunlowo: The primary goal is to raise awareness about the health benefits of eggs and to encourage people to incorporate eggs into their daily meals as a household essential.
Mr. Lawal: Apart from the World Egg Day rally, what other strategies does PAN use to promote this message?
Mr. Ogunlowo: We produce jingles that are aired on various media outlets during prime time to spread the message widely.
During the event, Mr. Lawal also highlighted the various egg-based recipes created by LIFA, encouraging people to move beyond simple boiling methods and incorporate eggs into diverse dishes. Mr. Ogunlowo expressed his gratitude to LIFA for its ongoing advocacy and extended his appreciation to LIFA’s president for his outstanding contributions to the poultry industry.
LIFA remains committed to promoting the inclusion of egg-based recipes in local cuisine and encouraging their adoption in households across Nigeria. The discovery of egg antibodies and LIFA’s continued efforts to advocate for egg consumption mark significant milestones in improving public health and nutrition.
Together, LIFA and PAN continue to champion the health benefits of eggs, ensuring that every household has access to this affordable and nutritious food.
